Imageworks Purchases 100 Silicon Graphics Workstations as Production Platform
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 23 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- SGI's (NYSE: SGI - news) long-time customer, Sony Pictures Imageworks, has made a significant purchase of 100 Silicon Graphics® Octane2(TM) visual workstations for continuing production on the Warner Bros.' feature film Harry Potter and the Scorcer's Stone and Columbia Pictures' Spider-Man and Stuart Little II. Sony Pictures Imageworks is providing these workstations to its content creation team, which has recently grown to more than 400 members. They will use the powerful, IRIX® OS-based Silicon Graphics Octane2 workstations with SGI(TM) VPro(TM) graphics for 3D modeling, 3D texture painting, color, lighting, compositing and digital effects on the three films currently in production and on many future projects.
The 100 Silicon Graphics Octane2 workstations will be used for the most graphics-intensive applications and include the VPro graphics V6, V8 and V12 configurations. Imageworks made the purchase to handle its increased workload this season, which, in addition to the three films planned for late 2001 and 2002 release, also includes a number of scenes for Evolution and America's Sweethearts, both due to be released this summer. One of the preeminent digital character animation and visual effects companies in the world, and a predominantly SGI system-based facility since its inception, Imageworks has been nominated for Academy Awards® for visual effects on Starship Troopers, Stuart Little, and Hollow Man -- all of which were created using SGI(TM) workstations and servers.
