Both the Washington Post and Baltimore Sun had articles yesterday essentially questioning whether the Fed waited too long to cut rates and then didn't cut aggressively enough. Besides oddly being four months late, the number of gloom-and-doom economic pieces over the last week or two makes me wonder if the economy isn't bottoming. I don't know if this talk tends to occur at economic bottoms, but it seems to me that economists may be coincident indicators, perhaps even lagging (not trying to offend any practitioners of the dismal science). It seems most were late in identifying the downturn; I suspect as many will be late in identifying the bottom. I just don't know if the economy can enter a prolonged slump if the universal opinion of economists is that the economy is in danger of doing just that. JMHO...
