Philips and ACTV Partner to Deliver Interactive Advertising
Philips Digital Networks and ACTV, Inc. Combine Expertise to Provide Targeted Advertising to European Markets Using Philips' Multimedia Home Platform (MHP)
LAS VEGAS, April 23 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- (NAB 2001) Philips Digital Networks today announced a partnership with US-based ACTV, Inc. (Nasdaq: IATV - news), a leading digital media company, to provide and promote solutions for interactive, targeted advertising on Philips' Multimedia Home Platform (MHP) open standard specification. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Under the terms of the agreement, Philips will integrate ACTV's targeted advertising software, SpotOn, into the MHP system, which Philips will launch later this year. SpotOn offers advertisers a targeted, addressable solution to reach their intended demographic base using multiple video streams available through a digital signal. Through this partnership, SpotOn will be available for the first time in Europe on an open platform.
Offered through Philips' Softworks business unit, the MHP open specification combines the technology of multiple interactive service providers, offering consumers a choice of digital content through a single set-top box containing multimedia, interactive and PC applications. The governments of a number of European countries are much in favor of adopting a standard applications programming interface for digital, interactive set-top boxes. The MHP standard, which was developed by the Digital Video Broadcasting Project, has already been adopted by the European Broadcasting Union.
Frank Bosveld, general manager of Philips Digital Networks' Softworks, commented: ``With Philips' MHP open standard and ACTV's proven interactive advertising solution, this agreement offers service providers the benefit of increased revenue through the ability to offer targeted advertising. Philips is committed to offering a comprehensive solution to access various interactive applications through a single set-top box.''
Gregory W. Lovett, senior vice president, ACTV Europe, added: ``Targeted advertising is increasingly recognized as one of the most exciting applications for digital, interactive television. SpotOn drives additional revenue for the platform provider without materially increasing costs per subscriber. We are excited to partner with Philips Digital Networks, a leader in MHP open standards, to offer interactive, targeted advertisements to the European market.''
