Some companies ... also encourage telecommuting a couple of days a week

and pointy-haired managers at other companies want to see their development resources with their own eyes at all possible times. who knows what these resources might do at home. they just can't be let alone lest they do something really productive; and make some of the micro-managers unnecessary (all puns intended :-(
