John,

I too have seen a noticeable decline in the number of AMD systems at retail, especially Compaq, and the reason for which has been bugging me. However, I think I now have the answer. After listening to the Compaq CC and both of his interviews on CNBC and CNN Moneyline, it appears that the flush of Intel systems from Compaq (and possibly HP) is due to inventory reduction. Compaq reduced inventory by $250 million in Q1 and will decrease it another $300 million in Q2. Now, which platform do these companies have high inventories of? Answer: Intel. Another reason for the weak AMD showing at retail recently may be due to the high demand in Europe. OEMs may be able to get better prices for AMD systems in Europe (vis a vis Intel) than in the US, and they may be diverting AMD units to Europe while they flush Intel inventory in the US.

Pravin.
