Taiwan stock markets moving in tight tunnel ahead of Analyst Meetings and Shareholder Meetings. Institutional investors waiting for corporate guidance on 2Q and 3Q earnings prospects and operating conditions. Retail investors are prohibited from margin lending on shares four (4) days and short position covering some five (5) days prior to Shareholder Meetings. TSMC (2330 TT), UMC (2303 TT), ASE (2311 TT), Quanta Computer (2382 TT), Asustek (2357 TT), Siliconware (2325 TT) will have Analyst Meetings this week, to be followed shortly by Shareholder Meetings for ASE, Siliconware and Hon Hai (2317 TT). Taiwan market expected to trade in compressed range on low volume near term.

TAIWAN PRESS: TSMC Chmn: Co Should Have Invested Less
TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--The chairman of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSM) said the chip foundry would be in a better position now if it had invested US$1 billion less before the chip sector started to weaken, reports the Economic Daily News, quoting Business Week magazine. However, Morris Chang said he expects the semiconductor industry to recover at the end of the year and that TSMC will press ahead with its 12-inch wafer plant plans.

Taiwan Shrs Flat Early; Foreign Buying Offsets Pressure

TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--Taiwan shares opened little changed Tuesday as a 4.8% plunge in the Nasdaq Composite Index was offset by apparent continued foreign buying, dealers said.

Semi Equipment : Trade group SEMI reported that the North American semi equipment industry book-to-bill ratio was 0.64 in March, down from 0.73 in February. This is slightly below estimates from Salomon Smith Barney (0.65) and SG Cowen (0.70).
