"And why do you need a fiber-optic line when you already have perfectly decent cable-modem or DSL service (when it's working)?"

elmatador and Thread- Albeit, neither CM or DSL is "perfectly decent" but notwithstanding, the statement does hit the nail on the head. Much as PC demand is stalled, so is access. Simply because no one needs higher speeds(generally speaking) and no one wants to pay for it if available.

If any companies pop their heads up to compete with the giant ILECs and MSOs with higher speed services, they get their heads taken off.

So if you are an incumbent SP, there is nothing driving you to upgrade to speeds higher than CM or DSL. If you are a SP and already struggle in "broadband hell," (costs vs revenues) then you roll out only what is the smallest capex increment possible--IMO, today that is CM and DSL.

Contrary to all the PR fluff out of the companies in the FTTH and 3G space, I still believe 3G and FTTH are at least 10 years off into the future. -MikeM(From Florida)
