I've been an Ericsson shareholder since 1991 and have paid close attention to them since then. I can't quite figure out where they went wrong. There were warning signs of sorts along the way. They took more than five years but ultimately were very successful in restructuring their old Infocom unit. This was a sign that they are slow to change. Of course now they've abandoned the no lay-off policy they struggled so hard to keep. The handset unit started displaying financial problems in late 1998 and early 1999, but the seeds to those troubles were undoubtedly sown much earlier. I don't have a grasp of what really went wrong though I can certainly accept that management was critically slow to react. Ramquist did a great job as CEO from 1990 to at least 1996. You must give him credit for developing Ericsson into the leading wireless systems company, which was no small feat given that they were competing against much larger, established companies all along. You must give him some credit. Where do you think Investors AB stands. Do they control Handelsbanken as well?
