New Report Presents Opportunities in Desktop Administration
From 1996 Through 2001
FRAMINGHAM, Mass., June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Accommodating users desires to
achieve a better return on their desktop investments represents a major new
opportunity for manufacturers of desktop hardware, system software, and
independent management applications, according to a new report from
International Data Corporation (IDC).
Aggressive efforts by leading PC manufacturers, as well as Intel and
Microsoft, will lead to an explosion in the shipment of PCs with embedded
manageability. By the year 2000, 36.9 percent of business PCs will be
manageable, up from just four percent in 1996. With this proliferation of
manageable PCs, demand for desktop administration products will continue to
rise rapidly. According to IDC, in 1997 users will spend $987.1 million on
desktop administration software products, 81 percent of which will be for PC
administration suites. By 2000, annual spending on PC administration software
will approach $1.6 billion, with 85 percent coming from suites.
IDC's research reveals one of the biggest challenges for today's IS
executive is controlling the "high cost of ownership" for PC desktops and
servers. "We live in a world where every office worker and mobile employee
expects to have a PC as well as network access to e-mail and mission-critical
business applications," said Rick Villars, IDC's director of networking
architectures and management research. "We also live in a world where
executives expect investments in IT equipment and services to improve the
bottom line and reduce overall expenses. The biggest challenge for today's IS
executive is to develop a strategy for success in both these worlds."
Users generally believe PCs are unmanageable. In addition, they perceive
even if PCs were manageable on an individual basis, a company cannot
consistently administer dispersed desktops from a central location. As a
result, organizations find themselves investing resources in dispersed and
duplicative staff with little or no improvement in overall efficiency.
IDC believes success in the IT market will go to those vendors that help
customers overcome these concerns. Manufacturers, resellers, integrators, and
users must agree upon standard policies and rules for desktop administration
that can be institutionalized in software solutions. Companies that are able
to reduce the administrative burden of managing large numbers of desktops can
minimize future expenditures in IS staff, reduce business application
downtime, and react more quickly to changing market conditions.
This report, Opportunities in Desktop Administration, 1996-2001:
Delivering Pervasive Management (IDC #B 13441), examines the technologies
