Yesterday Japan's massive NTT Do Co Mo announced that it would NOT be moving forward with G3 plans as previously announced. Software problems? Perhaps. But it caught my attention and made me immediately think if the king of handheld devices. . . Sony didn't have something up its sleeve. They have yet to make an entry into the new world of handheld interactive communcations and computing devices. Now I had been expecting them to make an earth shattering announcement. . . .that they had come up with something BETTER than what we currently had. . . like a broadband handheld with the Sony technology. However, I now think that they gave up trying to do the world one better.

However, it still makes me wonder what NTT could be thinking. . .or what they know that the rest of the world might not. Or are they just blowing smoke? Or do they really have software problems? Who can tell? Anyway. . . Today Sony announced a joint-venture company with Erricson called "Sony Erricson Mobile Communications". Did Sony throw in the towel? And decide to join 'em instead of trying to beat 'em?

But at the same time, Sony's name, experience, money and distribution outlets just about guarantee that the venture will be successful. And since ERICY holds one-half of the company, one would think that their stock price would benefit considerably more than that of Sony's.

ERICY is currently still beaten back to single digit territory. . . in fact it is under $6 as I write this. Both companies are down sharply. But come October 1, when they plan the rollout, could they become a contender in the handheld / wireless race? I don't know, but I learned long ago never to bet against Sony. Let's leave it at that.

Here is the announcement of their joint-venture: biz.yahoo.com

I am open to hearing comments pro and con regarding these companies and other handheld / wireless ventures, etc.
