Neo,

Albuquerque is 5,000 - 6,000 ft. elevation and Santa Fe sits at 7,000 ft.

When I was 25 lbs. lighter I competed regularly in mountain running races. These generally are between 7-100 miles in length and have between 3,000 and 50,000 ft of elevation change.

My favorite was the La Luz hill climb in the Sandia Mountains outside Albuquerque, which went up 4,500 ft. in 7 miles. It was always won by a Jemez Indian name Al Waqui, who could cover the distance in just over an hour, faster than a car could drive to the summit.
