The story sounds bizarre but by sheer coincidence I was recently with someone in the exact same situation, but with 4 kids. The mother was indignant about being stopped and came within seconds of being arrested because she would not shut her mouth. Kept telling the officer to leave her alone and go get the "real" criminals. I think I nearly broke her rib jabbing her in the side to get her to shut up.

Around here the cops generally only stop you to enforce the seat belt law if there are unbuckled children in the vehicle. They do it for safety reasons, or at least that's what the female officer (who had kids) told me.

The rule is very simple and pretty clear: If you are in violation of any law the officer has the right to arrest you, whether they exercise that right or not. Good reason to keep your vehicle maintained and licensed.

FWIW, if you are speeding in Ohio with out of state license/plates, you had better have the cash to pay the fine by posting bond on the spot. If not you had better be REAL nice to the officer!
