There were two problems with the Maginot Line: it failed to extend all the way along the Belgian border, and as a system of fixed fortifications, it could not address an end run. However, it defended the border with Germany very well, which is why the Germans invaded through Belgium. If there had not been a choice to create fixed fortifications instead of investing significant amounts in mobile defenses, there would have been no problem. Similarly, SDI would defend against one kind of problem, but would need to be supplemented adequately to defend against a possible end run.
