I once rewired the main shut off for a 1000v 3 phase electrical panel... Without shutting the power off... (getting it shutoff at the pole would have required a permit and roughly $200) I just put electrical tape around the ends of the wire (4 of them) and slowly slid the old switch off (these weight about 50lbs) then I slid the new one back over the wires and reconnected.
