There will be a price cutting war in the graphic integration PC chipset market in 2Q01. According to the “Economic Daily,” UMC (2303 TT) has provided a ‘very attractive’ foundry price to VIA (2388 TT) for its graphic integration chipset products as VIA wants to increase market share in this sector. Competition will increase in the PC chipset market in 2001 as SiS (2363 TT) and Acer Labs (5393 TT) have regained competence in this area. In our opinion, DRAM makers could benefit as the price war might stimulate more demand for PCs, and thus, more derived demand for DRAM. In the PC supply chain it is likely that some profits will shift from chipset suppliers to DRAM makers.
