No, I don't think that in her mind she "went out of her way to wreak misery on the wretched of the earth." I think she opposed birth control because she thought birth control was evil. I suppose that means she must have thought sex for pleasure was evil, but I don't know her rationale. And of course the more suffering, the more God is pleased and bestows grace upon the world. And pain killers she dismissed because-- well, why? I guess also because it was her belief that the more suffering, the more God is pleased and bestows grace upon the world?
Anyway, I think opposing birth control in that hungry country, which perpetuated the poverty and misery and illiteracy and great, God-pleasing suffering, is surely the most inhumane thing she did. It puts letting the dying cancer victims suffer like Christ on the cross in the shade. Imagine opposing abortion and birth control. Medieval. Anyone who would admire that, if they believe it, is very... unusual. Remember: It isn't birth control for herself she campaigned against. It was for others. Hundreds of millions of others.
I'm sure she felt holy and righteous as she praised Papa Doc and opposed all divorces except Princess Diana's and arranged to have more and more and more and more malnourished babies arrive to satisfy her God's desire to see the poor suffer.
It is just so twisted and unfortunate, Christopher. "Misguided" would be the kindest word.
If she is beatified, it will be a big mistake, imo. She is responsible for a lot of suffering.
Do you personally think that God grooves on it when human beings suffer? |
