Acterna and TyCom Sign Multi-Year Agreement for Fiber Optic Testers for TyCom Global Network

GERMANTOWN, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 25, 2001-- Initial Orders for 500-Plus Instruments will Enable Commissioning, Operation and Maintenance of Advanced Voice and Data Services on TyCom Global Network

Acterna ACTR today announced a multi-million-dollar agreement with TyCom Ltd. (NYSE:TCM, BSX:TCM), a leading provider of undersea systems and capacity to supply fiber optic test equipment.

To date, Acterna has received orders for more than 500 handheld fiber optic test sets and portable network analyzers to support deployment of the TyCom Global Network. The total orders received to date make this Acterna's largest contract.

Under terms of the agreement with TyCom, Acterna is providing Advanced Network Testers (ANTs) supporting bit rates up to 10-gigabits, as well as optical power meters, sources, attenuators, OTDRs (optical time domain reflectometers) and Acterna TestPad SDH analyzers.

The TyCom Global Network is planned to be the world's most extensive and technologically advanced undersea fiber optic network. Phase 1 of the TyCom Global Network is designed to offer multi-terabit capacity upgradeable to a maximum of 7.68 terabits per second, span approximately 90,000 kilometers and reach more than 30 major cities around the globe.

TyCom is designing and manufacturing the undersea cable, optical amplifiers and terminal equipment, and designing, building and equipping the global and regional network management centers and cable stations along the route. More than 1.6 million square feet of floor space in TyCom's TelExchange colocation centers is being developed in major cities.

TyCom's own fleet of cable ships, one of the world's largest, is installing and will maintain the network.
