4/25/2001 7:01:00 AM HELSINKI, April 25 (Reuters) - Mobile phone industry leaders Nokia (NOK1V) , Motorola (MOT) and Ericsson (LMEB) will make a joint announcement on Thursday regarding a new wireless industry initiative, Nokia said on Wednesday. "Company executives will provide details regarding a new wireless industry initiative, reflecting the evolution of wireless services," Nokia said in a statement.
Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer, declined to comment further but said it did not expect Nokia board members would participate in the presentation on Thursday.
"It's an important announcement and follows on similar announcements made over the years by Nokia and other industry players when it comes to industry standardisations and initiatives," a Nokia Ventures spokesman told Reuters.
In April 2000 leading handset manufacturers, including these three companies, launched the mobile electronic transactions (MET) initiative aimed at ensuring wireless devices could be used seamlessly and securely to make electronic transactions.
There has been a general trend in the industry, now the world's largest electronics market, to work more closely together to ensure wireless products and services are compatible with each other.
The three companies will hold a conference call about the new initiative at 1300 GMT on Thursday, Nokia said.
