What am I going to do with ten pounds of fresh bean sprouts?
I wanted some fresh bean sprouts for pad thai, and was close to my favorite Korean market late last night, so thought I'd get some there. They usually have a couple of boxes full on the counter with plastic gloves so you can fill a bag with as much as you want, but they were empty. They also usually have ten pound bags in a cooler, but they were empty too. So I tried asking people in the produce department - none of them spoke English. I wandered around and finally found a girl who spoke English - she was new - she didn't know what bean "sproups" were - another girl told her something that sounded like "tew." Oh, OK! She took me to the aisle with the canned bean sprouts.
No, I told her, "fresh." Fresh?
So I motioned for her to follow me and took her to the produce department, and showed her where they should be. Ah!
So she ran to the produce manager, and then ran to the office, and then ran back into the back, and then ran back out with a ten pound bag of bean sprouts, which she handed to me. "Very fresh!" she said, smiling, and ran off.
What could I do after all that? I bought them.
Anyway, the whole bag was only $2.50.
Now what?
They are very fresh. |
