I was a Mad Scientist when I was a kid (I just intended to ba Scientist; wasn't till many years later I realized I was mad.) One of the standard experiments you read about in many chemistry books is filling a flask with hydrogen and then lighting it. You get a nice blue flame around the mouth. BUT you have to be careful to drive out ALL the air in flask.

H2 + O2 + flame = EXPLOSION.

The books don't say how to be sure you've done that and I wasn't careful enough once. The hydrogen exploded and blew out the side of the flask AWAY FROM ME. Whew! Because if it had been the other side, I would have had some jagged holes in my chest.
