hehe

I guess this thread is open to stories of family members stupid and dumb acts as well...

My father had not been on a bike for some 20 years. His friend was over one day and had a very nice tandem (two seated bike) with him. So my dad and another long time bike absent friend get on for a little spin.

Initially my fathers friend was at the helm with my dad as stoker (rear seat rider). Everything went well and they cruised a few miles before they decided to let my father take the controls. This is where the error in judgement crept in....

So they come cruising by the house going about 25-30 mph. My mother says something to the affect that they are moving along very well. I begin to wonder...

We lived in a small neighborhood with a circular road and no exits other then coming back in front of our house. 5 minutes went by... no dad.... 10 min went by... no dad...

15 min later dad and his buddy come back up the road toward the house, carrying the tandem with a big ole taco'd front tire.

They had been moving along swimingly as they passed the house so they were both feeling pretty good. A small hill was available for the taking so they kicked it up a notch in order to REALLY get moving. As they got to the end of the road (turn right or go into woods sort of end) my father decided to hit the brakes. Only, new bikes don't have coaster brakes. So as he starts peddleing backward his buddy in the rear (who knows how to stop this machine) is thinking he is joking. My dad starts backpeddling faster and faster.... At this point the friend starts yelling to him instructing that the brakes are on the handle bars. By now it's too late.

Now came the decision: trees or curb

Dad chose curb. Must have hit it around 35 mph stopping the bike almost immediately and propelling the rear end in the air. The friend flys over my dads head and lands some 20-25 feet away. Dad was lucky, only flew around 15 feet.

Needless to say dad has not been on a bike since.
