VANCOUVER and RIO DE JANEIRO, April 25 /CNW/ - 360networks today announced the completion and lighting of a major network segment linking Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Sao Paulo, Brazil. The 1,200-kilometer (750- mile) terrestrial route was completed within budget and is scheduled to enter commercial service in late May.
The network segment is part of 360americas, a 29,000-kilometer (18,000- mile) undersea and terrestrial network that currently connects the United States, Brazil, Venezuela and Bermuda. 360americas will also connect Argentina in the third quarter and is scheduled to be complete in early 2002.
"Starting next month, we will be providing seamless broadband connectivity between Brazil, North America and Europe," said Greg Sieg, vice- president of operations - Americas. "This is an important network development as commerce between Brazil, the Americas and Europe is increasing significantly. In fact, we now have a direct link between Brazil and its two largest trading partners: the United States and Germany."
"The lighting of this segment also represents another important step to establishing a truly global footprint," Sieg added. "We are well on our way to having the only global optical mesh network, providing portable and scalable bandwidth across four continents."
360networks has already sold network capacity on 360americas to a number of international customers, including France Telecom, Intelig, Teleglobe, Impsat and OptiGlobe.
