Alcatel (ALA: news, msgs, alerts) Chief Executive Serge Tchuruk said at a press conference that the firm's made an initial bid for the Lucent. "They have a very large fiber optics division, which is the second biggest player in that market." The value of the business has been variously estimated by analysts between $4 billion and $8 billion.
