Toyoda Gosei Develops 30% Brighter LED

NAGOYA (Nikkei)--Toyoda Gosei Co. (7282) has developed a light-emitting diode that is 30% brighter than conventional LEDs yet costs the same. It achieved this using higher-quality gallium nitride crystals and an improved layering structure.

The company plans to eventually shift all of its LED products to the new model, beginning with May 1 shipments of "face-up type" LEDs, which have the electrodes pointing upward, and June 1 shipments of "flip-chip type" LEDs, which have the electrodes pointing downward and feature a large light-emitting surface area.

Toyoda Gosei also plans to begin marketing a line of LEDs in May that are just as bright as conventional devices but cost 20% less because they are smaller. These will be marketed for applications such as illuminated telephone buttons that do not require high brightness.
