Bob Kerrey's revelation that he has been suffering from a tortured mind since his Vietnam experience for the last 30 years should draw not only our sympathy, but hopefully an improved perspective on both the history of the 20th Century and our current stance on its last relic, Red China.

Vietnam was a major blunder in the protracted conflict of 1945/1989 which endangered the Free World and contributed to the at-least temporary successes of the 20th Century totalitarians who dominated so much of the world during that era. Had North Vietnam been dealt with effectively in the early 60's, the war and its many Kerrey-like tragedies would not have occurred, and the protracted conflict might have ended a decade or so earlier. But a lack of direction and commitment at the highest levels of leadership in the Free World's largest power brought about the folly that did so much damage to the cause of liberty for so long.

The same principle can be applied to our Taiwan/China policy, where we have been content to pretend for years that we recognize Taiwan as a Red Chinese possession, when the reality is that we don't. If Vietnam taught us anything it is that, when dealing with a murderous totalitarian regime, it is better to draw the line and assure them that they will all die if they cross it. The reality that we would defend Taiwan if attacked by China should not be a secret, and there should be no doubt about it in the minds of the murderers in Beijing.

The same kind of rock-solid pressure was practiced by Reagan to bring down the Soviet Union, and it will work as effectively with the Red Chinese.

And there are no former Senators today dealing with their mid-life crisis by publicly wringing their hands over accidentally killing civilians in Russia during a night-time battle...
