David,

Here's some interesting news about the importance of PSX 2 to Sony's profitability:

news.cnet.com

"Sony's PlayStation 2 operations lost money in the three months that ended in March. While the loss has narrowed since a year ago, profit from sales of the game machine and related software has not yet covered the development and production costs of the successor to its best-selling PlayStation console.

Game operations posted an operating loss of $269 million through the nine months to December. Sony's game division, which accounted for 40 percent of total sales in 1999, is not the cash cow it once was, with sales accounting for only 8.6 percent of the total in the nine months to December.

Even so, "the losses on game operations are narrowing," Yamamoto said.

Sony has sold more than 10 million PlayStation 2 consoles since their debut in March last year.

"There is no doubt that the game division is the most critical of Sony's operations now," Yamamoto said."
