stomper, history is on your side. A study I read recently showed that when a company was doing poorly, it poured out all the bad news possible (the opposite behavior of tons-of-good-news when things appear rosy), and the conclusion of this article was that the moves were designed to maximize executive options value. That is, pound the price low during the bust period to reduce the execution price for the next cycle and thus maximize executive compensation. I've come to believe that more and more companies are run for the benefit of a handful of rather wealthy folks at the top.
