I hate to tell you this Chris, but many people think that lawyers and judges have contributed more to this than any other leaders of society.

After the discussion of environmental science here recently, I got to thinking about how it came to pass that we can't trust our scientists any more. That was not always the case, as I recall. The only two explanations I could come up with were the decline in the quality of education and the financial incentives of partisanship over science in our litigious society. Our squirrelly justice system is costing us in ways that aren't always obvious.
