AMR says Oracle (stock: ORCL) may be one of the large vendors looking for a fire sale. Companies the research firm says would help the software maker supplement its technology line include Vignette (stock: VIGN), Requisite Technology, and Novell (stock: NOVL). Novell's stock has dropped from a 52-week high of $24.50 to about $4, and Vignette from $64.875 to around $5. Requisite is privately held. Oracle executives did not return phone calls.

Vignette's content-management products, integrated with Oracle's Internet File System, would “represent as complete a technology platform as anyone in the industry,” AMR analyst Bob Parker wrote in a research note published last week. Requisite would add catalog management to Oracle's fledgling procurement and exchange products. While acknowledging Novell would be a "long shot," Parker says the company's venerable network operating system products could find a home in Oracle's application server software.

In addition, GroupWise would give Oracle a corporate messaging platform and ZenWorks would get Oracle into the system-management market. "Perhaps Oracle is not searching for clearance-table bargains," Parker said. "The company may look in some different directions, but these three possibilities represent some interesting accessory options."
