Analysis The last time that the Conference Board’s help wanted index was as low as it was in March was in the spring of 1993, when the economy was struggling to emerge from a recession. The index has fallen by 22 points from a year ago and by 13 points since the beginning of the year. Between 1994 and 1999 it had fluctuated in a range between 80 and 90. dismal.com Weaker hiring activity is particularly problematic given the accelerating pace of layoffs, weak corporate earnings, and declining consumer confidence. The economy will be struggling to stay afloat during the next few months.
