Second Vote for Nevada Net Gambling Bill
by Stuart Kernaghan, WINNERonline.com
26 April 2001

Online gambling in Nevada almost got the green light yesterday, but the failure of a related bill to pass means that there will be a second vote on the issue.

The state assembly on Wednesday voted 37-2 to approve AB296, Merle Berman's bill that would legalize Net betting in Nevada. But the bill will have to go through a second vote because a piece of supporting legislature didn't pass.

Bill AB578, which sets licensing fees for online casinos, was a more contentious issue and fell one vote short of passing.

After the bill failed to pass, Assemblyman Bernie Anderson called for a second vote on the fee bill. Assemblyman Bob Beers then moved for a second vote on AB296.

The two bills are directly linked to one another. AB296 will establish policies for online gambling in the state, while AB578 legislates a $1 million licensing fee, a $100,000 application fee, and 6.25% state gambling tax on winnings. Slot manufacturers would also have to pay fees up to $250,000 to produce gambling software.

Many of those who voted against the second bill are concerned about the high price of admission for casinos, noting that only the major players will be able to launch online gambling sites.

The second vote for both bills is scheduled to take place Thursday, April 26. WINNERonline will have details of the revote as soon as they are available.
