Russ:

Starting to hear more of this talk from the majors. Have anything you'd like to sell 'em? Anybody have some ideas about PDG targets?

From a few sources, I've heard that PDG (and Barrick as well), have visited the Messina (Southernera 70%) mine site in S. Africa. Goldfields of S.A. also have disclosed discussions of an undisclosed nature with Messina representatives. Messina has a 17M oz PGM resource slated to begin production of 170,000 oz/year in 2003.

Since gold continues to tread water, it only makes sense for gold majors to consider getting into PGMs, currently a high-margin metal to mine.

As far as S. Africa, I understand everyone's concern about doing business in S. Africa ON THE SURFACE. But you have to ask yourself, why would Franco-Nevada put itself at such risk with last year's proposed merger with Goldfields, if S. Africa was such a bad place to do business? Also, why has Placer Dome (South Deeps) decided to make a foray into S. Africa?
