Hi Frank,

can an impervious medium, one that is not freely manipulated by the masses, survive in the face of alternatives?

I fall into the camp that believes that intellectual property rights and payment for artistry both of a traditional nature like movies and of the latest of on-line gaming, etc. ought to have a financial benefit for the creators.

Thus, I'm not a huge fan of piratical efforts like Napster and the DeCVV scofflaws. But, it is impossible to stop the flow of technological change, and so, we'll no doubt be discussing this at length for a long while ahead.

Is it an achievable end, after all?

I rather suspect that the end of the purloined DVD brouhaha will be some recognition by the movie studios of a profit center that can be developed from the distribution of movies via Web files. The industry was completely resistant to the VCR introduction and fought tooth and nail to prevent it. Only to find out that there was a pot of gold at the end of that VHS rainbow. Something similar is most likely to occur with DVDs.
