Microsoft (MSFT:Nasdaq - news) was down 2.8% in late afternoon after reports this morning that the company will push the release of its Windows XP software to October from August. Microsoft later confirmed its original timetable of a release sometime in the second half, but would not be more specific.

In a note this afternoon, Merrill Lynch estimated the delay could cost the company 1 to 2 cents a share for the year.
