Telscape files for Ch. 11 bankruptcy; chair, CEO resigns

ATLANTA, April 27 (Reuters) - Telscape International (NasdaqNM:TSCP - news), which provides telecommunications service to Hispanic communities in the United States and Latin America, said on Friday it has voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and that Chairman and Chief Executive Steve Raville has resigned.

Telscape said its day-to-day operations would continue unchanged, overseen by a newly created Office of the Chairman, comprised of Chief Operating Officer Peter Alexander.

The company said it plans to sell its non-core assets, including its Mexican network.

``The company is currently in negotiations with its major lender to arrange for debtor-in-possession financing,'' Alexander said.
