Geoff,

I like the bigger guys, but only in terms of how they operate as mining and exploration companies, not as investments (simply because of the A$ exchange factor). Sons of Gwalia, WMC, BHP... If you look at any one of these companies, they are mining just about everything (iron, copper, uranium, gold). Highly diversified businesses, much like their South African equivalents (e.g. Debeers, Anglo).

I've never traded an Aussie listing, but the bigger guys like BHP and WMC trade on the NYSE (probably a better alternative just to avoid the time difference).
