Ian, In this quote, you said matter. Newton is given credit for the conservation of energy as your references indicate.

Lavoisier is given credit for the theory of the conservation of matter as indicated by this trek through classical chemistry from Yale.

Two major discoveries on the principle of chemical behavior path the way to providing a working answer. First was the discovery of the law of conservation of matter by Antoine Lavoisier.
