I do not have the breakdown of underground vs. open pit, but the transition to open pit over the last 20 years and heap leaching technology has definitely changed the economic model of gold mining. I would go as far as saying it is a completely diffrent business than it was in 1980.

As for "picking the largest and ripest fruit from the tree", I guess you could call that high grading, human nature, or just plain common sense depending on your perspective.
