b. Includes $171.1 million in employee compensation expense. Excluding charge, income was $4 million, or 4 cents a diluted share.
Rambus Inc. (RMBS) said results in the latest second quarter include $23.7 million in royalties revenue, nearly seven times last year's royalties of $3.5 million.
Operating expenses in the latest second quarter also include $7.3 million in litigation costs compared with $660,000 last year and $4.3 million in the first quarter.
Rambus said litigation expenses rose sharply at the end of the second quarter due to Infineon Technologies AG's (IFX) late production of documents in the Richmond case, which resulted in additional depositions.
As reported, Rambus is suing Infineon for allegedly violating Rambus' patents on DRAM semiconductor connection systems.
In March, a federal judge granted Rambus' request to delay the trial after its attorneys claimed that Infineon failed to fully disclose internal documents related to the suit.

Rambus' second quarter includes $2.1 million in deferred revenue, compared with $1.5 million in the first quarter.
The company said second quarter results, which missed analysts' consensus estimates by 3 cents, were hurt by the declining SDRAM prices and litigation costs.
Rambus also blamed higher rent and other operating expenses.
The company expects expenses to remain level in the third quarter, but total revenue from current licenses is expected to decline 20% sequentially in the third quarter, plus or minus several points.
Rambus, which derives the majority of its royalties from SDRAM-compatible ICs, blamed a reduction in the average selling price of SDRAM ASPs.
Based on second quarter revenue of $31.2 million, Rambus estimates third quarter revenue of about $24.96 million, compared with $17.8 million in the year-ago third quarter.
Rambus said its revenue outlook may improve if its signs additional licensees.
Rambus' litigation expenses exceeded its expectations because of delays in the Infineon case as well as in its patent litigation with Hyundai Electronics Industries Co. (Q.HEL) and Micron Technology Inc. (MU).
Last August, Micron sued Rambus for alleged violations of federal antitrust laws, and the invalidity, non-infringement and non-enforceability of certain Rambus patents.
Hyundai filed a suit seeking a court order to declare its products don't infringe Rambus patents.
In September, Rambus filed its own patent infringement suits against Hyundai and Micron and also asked the U.S. International Trade Commission to investigate "unlawful importation" of Hyundai SDRAM and DDR SDRAM memory products which Rambus said are covered by its parnts.
On Feb. 13, Rambus said the judge in the suit against Hyundai and Micron Technologies delayed the trial on the substantive issues and focused instead on procedural issues.
Rambus said Thursday it expects some decisions related to the litigation in the third quarter.
Rambus' shares were recently quoted at $18.30 on the Island ECN order book, down from their regular-session close of $19.53 on the Nasdaq National Market.
