SYMC ( Nice run & $58 up $64) Earns Exceeds Expectations

CUPERTINO (Reuters) - Internet security software developer Symantec Corp. (NasdaqNM:SYMC - news) on Wednesday reported fiscal fourth-quarter earnings of 62 cents per share, a 13 percent increase over earnings of 55 cents per share in the year-ago period.

Analysts had on average expected Symantec to report earnings for the fourth-quarter ended March 31 of 61 cents per share, with estimates ranging from 60 cents to 62 cents, according to Thomson Financial/First Call.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based maker of the popular Norton anti-virus software said fourth-quarter net revenue of $250.6 million marked a 15 percent increase from the same period the year before on strong sales in enterprise and international markets.

Symantec said its revenue for fiscal year 2001 was $944.2 million, a 14 percent gain over $826.6 million for fiscal year 2000.

Shares of Symantec ended trading on Wednesday down 0.54 percent at $57.27. The company's shares are up 72.5 percent since the start of the year but down 21.7 percent from a 52-week-high of $73.13.
