Personally, I've always thought of IPM as sort of a mdern day Reardon Steel (from Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged). For anyone not familiar with the book, Reardon Steel develops a revolutionary new building metal that is cheaper, stronger, superior to anything else known. Reardon becomes a target for destruction by several different parties with a clear interest in the NON-development of such a revolutionary product (large established competitors, governments and government agencies etc.) Is this story ringing any bells to anyone?
