Cor, I am not sure that "multiline" and "multiplex" are the same, but I would defer to experts on that. What you bolded may indicate that this specific one might also be multiplexed (because of the n>m). Nevertheless, they are not claiming the bus, they are claiming an apparatus for storing and retrieving, one of the elements is that multiline. In other patents, much broader claims have been granted. This specific claim is (and the patent) relates to two memories . Whether they derive from this patent does not matter really, if the original specification had disclosure on which the broader claims were granted, the fact that a narrow claims was granted here is not that important. It is quite possible that the 1990 applications had so many different "inventions" (as defined by the PTO) that some of the divisionals or continuations are completely different from this one. By the way, I do not think that any one here has seen the original 1990 application, that would be quite helpful.
