In connection with any semiconductor device. Some of their claims are quite broad and cover communication protocols between "general" semiconductor devices. Put it this way, if IFX decided at the time that their SDRAM or DDR approach (before the Jedec standard, but according to the same) was patentable, and filed a patent, the PTO could even use one of the applications (not the claims) that issued where the terminology was "bus" rather than multiplex bus" and deny them a patent. Take just the simple "register" on the memory device itself.
