Reporters in Puerto Rico to cover the Miss Universe pageant are chasing down the suggestion by French Web site L'Éxamineur that Miss France began life as a monsieur and has since omitted important details of her life. Financial scribes suggest that Amazon, too, may be surgically reconstructed. Sure, the über-bookseller's most recent quarterly loss of $49 million was smaller than had been predicted. But that's only because it sliced off an array of one-time charges, according to media outlets. Missing from this quarter's financials were non-recurring costs such as stock-based compensation costs, goodwill charges related to acquisitions, restructuring charges and Amazon's share of the losses from its Net investments, the Wall Street Journal detailed.
