Not as bad as it looks

But some analysts said JDS is not necessarily in as bad shape as
some of its numbers may suggest. The company's realignment plan
-- including layoffs, closing some offices and transferring some
production operations to China -- was met with positive reviews. The
feeling is that JDS realignment plan will yield positive results in the
near future.

"We believe the company is taking the right steps to realign its
business during this downturn," said Jim Liang of WR Hambrecht in
a research note. Liang said he thinks the inventory correction in the
optical component space could be nearly completed by the end of
June. Liang added that JDS has been diversifying its customer base,
making it a more stable company overall.

Arnab Chanda, a senior research analyst with Lehman Brothers, said
he favored JDS because of the large-volume nature of the optical
components business and that the company is "almost completely a
sole-source manufacturer of its products."

Chanda said because of JDS's dominant marketshare, and an
anticipated upturn in fiber optics, the key to JDS's future lies in the
next three to five years. "They'll probably be one of only three or four
large optical component companies left by then," Chanda said.
