Mexico - SABI via NewsEdge Corporation : Mexico, Apr 25, 2001 (El Economista/SABI via COMTEX) -- Mexican mobile telephony is set to grow at a rate of 18% annually to 2006 when there will be 35 million mobile phones in use. This prospect brought Vodafone to the table, acquiring shares in Iusacell from the Peralta family for nearly US$1bil, as well as Telefonica which bought Cedetel and related shares from Motorola for over US$1bil. Telmex has beefed up by forming America Movil for mobile and international concerns. Unefon and Pegaso (clientele up 23% in four months) have both reported significant growth whilst US firm Nextel is likely to be asked to provide trucking services in Mexico and Midicel, subsidiary of Miditel, is keen to win back the licences (for wireless mobile and fixed telephony) it lost in 1998 due to an inability to pay up.
