I still cannot find the voting pattern for "poor whites", but this is kind of interesting:
In '98, those without a high school diploma had the biggest identification with the Democratic Party, at 67%. High school graduates, 52%/Some college, 49%/College graduates, 48%.
A majority of those in the bottom 2/3rds of income supported the Democrats, at each level. Those between the 17th and 33rd percentiles were the highest, at 61%. From the 68th to the 95th, the identification with the Democratic Party is 46%, and from the 96th to 100th percentile, 37%.
Blue collar and unskilled laborers support the Democrats more than any other occupational groups, 59% and 53% respectively. The South is down to 48% who are registered or lean Democrat, but the "non-South" is only at 53%, so the gap is not so great.
