Yes, of course, "close" is what I meant. One of these days I'll learn to say what I actually mean...it's a work in progress.

The problem with the solution at the link you suggested was that I could not even get Outlook Express to come up. I found several other suggested solutions on-line, including deleting the FOLDERS.DBX file and making sure no .dbx files were set to read only (non were), but nothing seemed to help. Finally went to the Microsoft site and reinstalled IE 5.5.

Everything seems okay now.
