"Ericsson, the dominant TDMA vendor in Latin America, will try to convince its customers to move to GSM technology." This is quite unbelievable. Ericy buys Qcom's infra business and doesn't want to sell cdma infra. Ericy is doing something stupid. Instead, it should tout the advantages of each, WCDMA and cdma and let the carrier decide. "cdma is technologically superior and has economic advantages; but WCDMA has this purported advantage. We are experts in both and will sell whichever one you want." That would be the smart way to play it. But, Ericy seems to be going for the buck: WCDMA means more base stations and more infra $ in its pocket.
