42 electrical systems will start appearing in the 2005 models, probably in luxury cars at first. Initially there will be a dual 12/42 volt system so that current 12 volt devices don't have to be eliminated all at once. The goal is to eliminate engine belts, improve performance, and get 10% better mileage to boot.

There will be a larger spark with the higher voltage, but fuses will blow in a short just as they do now. 42 volts was chosen as a practical solution between the 110 volts in our houses and the 12 volts now in our cars. The engineers feel that the voltage can be handled safely.

I would prefer a 42 volt shock from a misplaced hand over getting it caught in a fan belt.
